Selecting the correct polyolefin shrink film sizes is critical for achieving a professional, tight, and durable package. Unlike PVC or PE films, polyolefin (POF) offers high clarity and strength but requires precise sizing to activate its shrink properties effectively without tearing or leaving excessive loose material. An ill-fitting film can lead to production jams, increased waste, and poor product presentation, directly impacting operational efficiency and brand perception.
Understanding the relationship between product dimensions, film shrinkage rate, and seal area allows businesses to minimize material costs while maximizing protection. The goal is to use the smallest possible film that still accommodates the product and the sealing mechanism, ensuring a neat finish.
Determining the right size starts with accurate measurements of the product. For center-folded film, which is common in automatic L-bar sealers, the film width must be sufficient to wrap around the product’s perimeter plus an additional allowance for the seal. A general rule of thumb is that the film width should be equal to half the product’s perimeter plus 2-3 inches for the seal overlap.
Polyolefin film typically shrinks between 40% to 50% when exposed to heat. This significant reduction means the initial bag or tube size will be much larger than the final package. The combination of size and gauge determines the overall strength and clarity of the final package.
The physical dimensions of the film roll itself, including core size and roll diameter, must match the specifications of the shrink wrapping machine. Using a roll that is too large or heavy can strain the machine’s motors, while a roll with an incorrect core size may not fit the unwind shaft. Ensuring compatibility prevents downtime and mechanical failures.
Precise sizing directly correlates to cost savings. By optimizing the film width and length, companies can reduce material usage by up to 15-20% over time. This not only lowers direct material costs but also reduces the environmental footprint of the packaging process. Regular audits of film usage and adjustment of machine settings can help maintain this efficiency.
Proper storage of polyolefin shrink film is essential to maintain its dimensional stability. Exposure to extreme temperatures or direct sunlight can cause the film to pre-shrink or become brittle, altering its effective size and performance. Store rolls in a cool, dry place, ideally at room temperature, and keep them in their original packaging until ready for use.
Handling film with clean, dry hands or gloves prevents oils and moisture from affecting the seal quality. Damaged edges on a roll can lead to tracking issues in the machine, so inspect each roll before installation. By adhering to these practices, you ensure that the film performs as expected, delivering consistent and high-quality results.
